We are very lucky to have Mark Wilson as one of our taverners as he writes up brilliant blogs to remind everyone who was there what happened and to show those who were not able to make it what they missed.

A message from Matt Bagwell

"On the eve of the Last Orders at the Bar Fantastic Tavern event, I wanted to whet your appetite for the evening ahead and ensure that come rain or shine (mostly rain I suspect), you brave the weather, make the trip and are with us by 7pm at Ravensbourne.

I have worked with Ravensbourne, their students and incubating companies, Greenwich Council and their start up businesses and The Future Laboratories to make sure we have plenty of thoughts on 2012 trends to hear about and assess. We will also be joined by Mike Short, VP of Innovation and R&D at O2/Telefonica, who will help us understand the vision for the Digital Peninsula and what is already happening. As I have said before – and to paraphrase Alan Kay – the best way to predict the future is to actually invent it. That is true of what a variety of organisations – including Ravensbourne – are actually doing and it is something different, something special.

I've ordered enough beer and wine to sink a battleship (thanks EMC Consulting). Greenwich Council and our kind sponsors, Marcus Donald People, will feed you and make sure you have entertainment after the main event.

The Fantastic Tavern - Last Orders at the Bar

Here is an update from Matt for those of you who have signed up to the TFT on the 26^th, and a reminder for those of you who have not signed up yet….

“Some three years or so ago, I started the Fantastic Tavern. It was to be a meeting of people who cared about ‘digital’ – as it was then – gathering in a pub and having a conversation. Over the months, we have run 28 events and the community has grown to over 1000 Taverners.

We have explored so much together and enjoyed a fair few pubs and pints. It's been a great experience, made possible by great contributions – of time and content – from people.

Now it is time to assign the Fantastic Tavern to history.

In keeping with the brand, the next – and last event – is Last Orders at the Bar and it will be held somewhere magical on the 26^th January (that's in three weeks). There are still lots of details to be planned but I wanted to ensure that you get a flavor for the evening and get it – and your attendance – in the diary.

Each year at about this time, we run a Trends Briefing. Typically friends and colleagues create the content and then pitch the trend to the audience. They in turn rate it as ‘hot’ or ‘not’ for the year ahead. Think Top Gear.

It’s great fun and also very informative. As it’s not broken, I’ll not change it this year.

Oh, go on then. Lets change it a bit. Change is good.

Firstly, we are inviting the students of Ravensbourne to create the content, not the typical crowd. This should give all of us a unique, fresh and cutting edge perspective on what’s going to be important to us this year – as practitioners but also as part of society as a whole. The students are briefed and already working away on some great presentations.

There will also be guest speakers not least my beloved friends from the Future Laboratories. Of course, we will not have time for one of their conventional trends briefing – an immersion I highly recommend – but they are preparing a point of view about 2012 to share with us. Trust me when I say that what they do and what they talk about is of the highest quality and well worth coming to hear.

Finally, lets reinvent the pub bit.

There is something – somewhere – that I have been involved in (a little) for several years and it's an incredible gem that I want to share with you. I’m going to ask you to take a trip with me. A short one.

The Greenwich Peninsula, home to the 02 and Ravensbourne, lots of new enterprises and some established one (like TFL) and the Council itself – is an incredible place. Moreover, it represents an incredible idea. There is something different happening here – something powerful and full of promise.

Today, at it’s heart there is Ravensbourne. I guarantee you that this place for learning and developing will power you away. Set aside your memories of education and come and see the future, now.

Then also hear the vision therest of the Peninsula – a vision for an enabled community that is being planned to be a better, prosperous, open and exciting place to work, live, learn and be entertained. You may remember we all brainstormed ideas for that vision in 2011? They are coming to life.

You have to see this to believe it, to understand its potential. Forget the Roundabout. This is where it’s at. It’s where something different is happening.

So yes, I’m asking you to be at Ravensbourne, which is at Greenwich North, at 6.30 for a 7pm start in two weeks time.

Last week, Marketing Week magazine celebrated the importance of data at its annual Data Strategy Awards, a gala event attended by more than 500 of our industry's movers and shakers. And walking off with the top award in the Social Media category was our own 'NL Daily' social hub project for our client, New Look.

EMC Consulting Quiz Night

On Tuesday night we held the 2nd EMC Consulting Quiz Night.

We had 9 brave teams ready to compete for the Winners title and the prize of Middlesex CC tickets, champagne and chocolates, and they all stepped up to the challenge. Not only was the night about intelligence, banter, pizza and beer but it was raising money for those affected by the riots.

The first task of the night is always to come up with the most entertaining team name, and we were not disappointed, unfortunately not all can be listed on my blog but my personal favourite was Game, eCet and Match.

Once we all accepted that there is no arguing with the quiz master as they are always right the games began.

The rounds were:

When the final scores we added up it was a close run battle but the winners were….. Notcutting Edge (made up of JB, Sam, Ed and Sunil). Well done team!!!!

What has The Fantastic Tavern been up to and what is coming next?

Here is a little note from Matt Bagwell to tell you what we have been up to at TFT lately….

“I thought I'd let you know what's happening in Fantastic Tavern land these days as you might think its been a bit quiet.

In fact, as I say in this blog post, quite the opposite is true.

For any of you who were at the last TFT with its theme of gamification, the good news is that Cancer Research (with some support from EMC Consulting), has shortlisted several possible concepts for further consideration and definition. If you feel you'd like to be a part of a taverner team that does this - freely initially – let me know. Thank you all for coming to the event and then contributing your brain power for such a good cause. It's nice to think The Fantastic Tavern can make a tangible difference.

In fact, this year has seen the Tavern focus on helping other organisations. Some of you attended the brainstorm we did with Greenwich Council about the future of a community and what they should be considering as they unfold the grand plans for the Greenwich Peninsula. Once again, you came, you drank the beer and you gave your insights and thoughts. The Council was hugely challenged and impressed. Here's just a little of what they said the morning after:

"Just wanted to thank you for last night and for the support you are giving to us. It was a fascinating discussion which generated many valuable ideas, that we look forward to taking forward. It was also very enjoyable and evening."

Of course, I cannot sit on my hands, reflecting on the things we have done.

So we kicked off the Builder's Breakfast Series yesterday. We are undertaking a Holy Grail like quest – to find the real return on investment in social. This series will include three breakfasts and then culminate in the theme and content for the next Fantastic Tavern, planned for October 13th. If you want to be at that Tavern watch your email as a separate email invite will follow next week. I hope to see many of you there.

There are other ways that you can be involved in Tavern activities too. You could sponsor an event – you buy the beer for example. You could contribute content – the theme of the Builder's Breakfast might be a focus for you – if so let me know. You might have a theme you'd like us to cover - I'm open to suggestions. Or you could be a brand that would like to host your own Tavern–like event with my help. I've run Private Taverns like this and they are great fun and exclusively focused on your business – please get in touch if this sounds like something you'd appreciate (yes, we still drink at it).

I hope that as we race through the year, you get something out of The Fantastic Tavern. It’s great fun sharing beers with you all but I also like to hear that you value what we talk about together.

Liam Westley: Go Asynchronouse with C#5

Anders Hejlsberg announced the Visual Studio Async CTP at PDC 2010.

This CTP means you don’t need to create callback functions anymore and can write code in the same way as if it were synchronous. The compiler will do all of the heavy lifting for you.

Liam Westley

Liam is Head of Engineering at IMC Group Ltd as well as running his own company where he specialises in software for Broadcast Television although he recently diversified into software for the NHS. His Niagara SMS moderation system has been used by QVC UK for the last four years to display SMS messages from viewers, live, on screen.

Recently Liam completed a new ticketing system for Hat Trick Productions which is now providing e-tickets to shows such as Have I Got New For You, The Armstrong and Miller Show and It's Only A Theory.

Liam has worked for chellomedia, GMTV, BSkyB, SmashedAtom and Original Thinking Group. In his time he created the first in house weather system for Sky News using Visual Basic 1.0, acted as architect for two general election systems, project managed the launch of the GMTV web site, was key to delivering the first interactive television chat service in the UK for BSkyB and helped launch the first live shopping channels in the Netherlands.

Domain Driven Design by Eric Evans is one of the classic texts on the subject of domain modelling. Many of its terms, such as repository, have entered developers everyday language. But how much do you know about DDD? In this presentation we look at how DDD helps us model a domain. We will introduce core ideas such as Ubiquitous Language, and we will explain how the classic patterns: Aggregates, Entities, Repositories etc. help us to build better domain models.

If you have not already heard about the next Fantastic Tavern then where have you been?

On Thursday 7th July from 6pm we have exclusive use of The Brickhouse, 152c Brick Lane, London, E1 6RU. It has 3 floors, 3 bars and a 2am license so you know it is going to be an amazing (and late) night.

Matt Bagwell will be your host for the evening and will be taking the stage with a panel of interesting speakers - Nathan Williams (Strategist at Wolff Olins), Richard Sedley (Commercial Director at Foviance), Rik Skews (Electronic Arts) and Tom Hopkins (Strategy Director at Fortune Cookie).

Once the panel have impressed us with their knowledge (no pressure guys) we will be breaking out to gamify Cancer Research.

We will then continue the evening with a DJ challenge where 4 DJs will take to the decks and compete for the prize of a Fantastic Tavern Bottomless Tankard.

As usual EMC Consulting will be providing some drinks and nibbles to get the night started.

Digital Futures – The Fantastic Tavern think tank

On Thursday 14th April we hosted The Fantastic Tavern at The Horniman by the river in SE1.

“Imagine being able to influence very fundamentally how your community would be designed, built, populated (commercially at least), governed, used and enjoyed. A green field opportunity for a digitally-enabled, co-operative, connected society with great self awareness, empowerment and respect. A utopian dream perhaps?

Maybe a little, but it was the challenge put to the Fantastic Tavern by John Comber from Greenwich Council. To discuss what should be done and how, so that our ideas could be fed into the planning process for the continued development of the Greenwich Peninsula, home to the O2 dome and Ravernsbourne.”

UX Sketch Club returns

We are excited to have another busy week with the UX Sketch Club.

We are hosting 2 events in our London office on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th April 2011, click here to find out more.

These sessions are going to be focused on Sketchnotes - they are a visual way of taking notes at talks, meetings, from books your reading or just to capture your ideas. The session is hosted by Eva-Lotta Lamm who creates fantastic sketch notes as seen here > http://www.evalotta.net/sketchnotes/

We are also really pleased to have a number of members of the sketch club coming to The Fantastic Tavern on Thursday 14th to help us sketch out our brainstorms for the digital future for Greenwich.
