SSIS: Live Search Macro for SQL Server Integration Services

Just for a laugh I have started playing around with Live Search macros. In case you don't know, Live Search Macros are our way of building tailored search engines to search only specific content.

I went for an obvious subject for my first Live Search Macro - SQL Server Integration Services. This macro searches all of the following sites for SSIS content:

I deliberately haven't included Books Online in this list - if you want to search Books Online then go right ahead. This macro is intended to be for searching SSIS community content rather than the formal documentation. This list is by no means exhaustive nor immutable so if you have more websites that you think should be added to this list, let me know by posting a comment to this blog.

You can use the SSIS Live Search macro via this link: http://search.live.com/macros/jamiet/ssis/

You can even choose to search a macro rather than the whole of Live Search itself from right inside the address bar of IE7:

That's a great example of combining software and services into something that becomes wholly useful.

UPDATE 10th April 2007 : This macro is now up on Windows Live Gallery too : http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=0d838135-ead3-4f4f-b192-44c37f1d794a&l=4

UPDATE 1st May 2007 : It would be remiss not to point out that the same is possible with Google custom search. Robert Scoble talks about this here: http://scobleizer.com/2007/05/01/appleman-raves-about-googles-custom-search-capabilities/

Thanks for including me with all the other great resources in the list. I feel a bit outclassed :) , but I'm definitely honored.

I was just using this to do some research for a forum post. Normally, I don't use this to look for my own blog posts, but I was looking for examples that were similar to a post I made last month. I noticed that my blog didn't seem come up in the results at all. Any idea whether this might be something in the search macro or something wrong on my site?

In quickly testing this, the URL for my site shouldn't include a www prefix - it should be just agilebi.com/cs/blogs/jwelch.

John,

Copied and pasted from the macro:

site:http://agilebi.com/cs/blogs/jwelch/

So its strange that its not finding it. Do your posts show up on a regular search using http://search.live.com?

Not sure if my previous comment made it in - if this is a repeat, my apologies.

Live Search does find my posts - try searching for "iterate resultset". After some more testing, it appears that it works fine if the site reference is "http://agilebi.com/cs/blogs/" but not if it is "http://agilebi.com/cs/blogs/jwelch/". I'm not sure why that is, but since my blog is the only one on the site (and will remain so for the foreseeable future), could you alter the URL in the macro to the shorter version?

Thanks,

John

Firstly great blog, lots of really useful info and tips.

Apologies if this isnt quite on topic, but spurred on by your example, I thought I'd have a quick look at Search Macro's and put together a TSQL Reference Search Macro:

http://search.live.com/macros/contraflo/tsql

Handy when you want to quickly check the syntax or some obscure options that can be used in a command.
