HTC Touch

The blogosphere is alive today with news of the HTC Touch smartphone.

I'm an unashamed fan of Windows Mobile but I won't be buying myself one of these. Why not? Because I don't believe that touchscreens are a killer feature for mobile phones. Touchscreens have been with us for some time now (I had a Windows Mobile touchscreen device myself until about 6 months ago) but they don't offer something that you can't do already, they only offer a slightly different way of doing it. As such I don't see this news resulting in a new wave of applications and services for mobile phones. Of course, that won't stop Apple's iPhone selling like hotcakes.

So, if touchscreens aren't the killer feature for mobile phones, what is? Simple. GPS. When GPS-equipped phones reach suitable market penetration I expect to see a whole raft of location-aware applications entering the mainstream.

We're already seeing some applications with the introduction of Windows Live Mobile and, later, Google Maps for Mobile; both of which have features that integrate with your phone's GPS receiver (if it has one). Do you want to find your nearest restaurant, cinema or hospital? Lost and want to know how to get to somewhere familiar? These two applications will both help you.

What say you dear reader? Are you planning to rush out buy an HTC Touch? Or perhaps you're one of the massed hoards waiting for the iPhone? Let me know by posting a comment.

I really don't get the hype behind the iPhone (other than the name beginning with "i"). Closed to third party developers? Do the exact same thing as all the other smartphones on the market, and cost $200 more?? Screen that I have to touch and get all dirty and greasy??? Sign me up!!!!

I fully agree: GPS is the killer feature, not the touch screen. In fact, my HTC mobile with a touch screen does often things I did'nt intend ...

What I want is:

- Flip phone the size of RAZR

- Full screen on the top half to get correct aspect ratio for Windows Mobile

- GPS support - this is a must in this day and age

- One handed dialing capability (my Sprint PPC-6700 is terrible for this)

- NO CAMERA!

- External media cards, be it SD, mini/microSD, etc...

- No antenna stub - what good are they?

- Stylus that lasts and doesn't get loose in its holster

- Keyboard perhaps, but I rarely use mine.  Seems faster sometimes to just grab the stylus and use the on screen keyboard

- Audio must be loud - the PPC-6700 has a defect in that the earpiece speaker is hard to hear

- Stick around a $250 price point!  ;)

I've got a SPV M700 Touch Screen Windows Mobile phone and have to say the touch screen definately isnt the best feature of it!! The SatNav on it is way cool though and it does connect via GPS to my TomTom aswell ;-)

I will be starting a new site next month called commuter heaven http://www.commuter-heaven.com, which will be full of mobile gadgets/phones/pdas, laptops etc...

I am at the moment exploring the HTC touch to review on the site and will be doing a head to head comparison of that and the iPhone.. come check it out next month..

So far though the touch has been pretty good you cant beat windows mobile. Although I do think the iPhone wil be something else.. but at an extra cost.. and I will be working out.. is it worth it and what are the key differences..?

On the contrary the future is touch screen phones because:

1. software is the key to flexibility and a better text entry experience

2. typing on screens is very intuitive - go to most restaurants today and you will see that orders are inputted on on-screek keys

3. Larger screens are needed for a good video experience

4. Thumbing is just not productive for getting any work done

5. The telephone keypad is useless for mobile productivity

The on-screen keys just have to be large and comfy

Hmm - but doesn't the HTC Touch, being a Windows Mobile 6, allow for installation of a GPS software system that would speak to an external GPS receiver that is bluetooth enabled?

I'm a Dell Axim X51V user.... and am on the verge of replacing my aging Audiovox 8910 phone and go with the HTC Touch and the Bell $7 unlimited email, IM and Web browsing package.
