SSIS Junkie

Once upon a time this blog was a hive of activity. Now however its pretty lifeless as you can probably tell so if are pining for more of the same you can find me over at http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson. I look forward to seeing you there!

Microsoft to acquire Zoomix

News just in… Microsoft have purchased Zoomix, a data quality software vendor.

From the press release:

Zoomix will contribute a critical layer of data improvement to Microsoft's SQL Server Data Platform

Interesting stuff. One would think this will sit fairly and squarely within SSIS given that SSIS will be shipping Data Profiling abilities in SQL Server 2008 so I find it intriguing that I found out about this via Kirk Haselden’s blog. Kirk doesn’t work in SQL Server, he works for the MDM team and in his blog he said:

the Microsoft Master Data Management team is excited at the possibilities this presents for our customers and we'll be working with the SQL Server team going forward to integrate the Zoomix and other DQ capabilities into the master data application

Is this an MDM play or a SQL Server play? From the outside it seems, up to now, like these two teams have been forging their own separate paths so hopefully this is the first sign that MDM and SQL Server will be pulling together in the future.

It seems that MS has done a much better job recently of relating their products. I'm hoping it explains the delay in getting a more recent copy of Visio for Enterprise Architects -- with the release of SQL 2008, and Entity Framework coming out, combining true ORM to ER designing for both CLR languages and SQL would be powerful -- and my wish, so we'll see.
