Mark Peters' Blog

Podcasting Kit for SharePoint

I had been searching for blog platforms that could accommodate both podcasts and video and have the ability to download them to a mobile device.

I found a tool that Microsoft had built called Academy Mobile and they were using internally. The tool is built on a MOSS 2007 platform and allows the posting of both video and audio files to a site. This allows the user to watch or listen to the file directly from the browser. Alternatively the user can download the files to a mobile device like a phone, Zune or iPod. Once the user has watched or listened to the file, they are able to log back into the site and leave a comment on what they thought of it and also give it a rating from 1 – 5 stars.

Have a look at the video below that gives a detailed review of Academy Mobile from Michael Gannotti - a Senior Technology Specialist at Microsoft.

Up until now, this has been a purely internal project for Microsoft, but they have just released a public copy via Codeplex for everyone to have this functionality they have produced.

This now gives an easy way of delivering eLearning and training internally as well as giving an organisation the ability to deliver a message to all of the company via video straight to the desktop.

Looks excellent. E-Learning managed by SharePoint is certainly the future with packages like Competentum's ShareKnowledge becoming increasingly popular.
