I have several friends and family who have had problems with a certain versions of MSN messenger that repeatedly crash their machines or hang their machines even when they try to upgrade from MSN messenger itself.
I've found the best solution to the problem is to close MSN messenger down completely and download the latest version from http://messenger.msn.co.uk/download/
